This brilliant French naval officer and explorer met the First fleet at Botany Bay in 1788. He has Mt. La Perouse named after him in Tasmania and the expedition of D’Entrecasteaux which landed in Tasmania in 1792 was in part sent to try and discover La Perouse’s fate. An applicant for La Perouse’s mission who was not finally selected was a 16 year old Corsican – Napoleon Bonaparte.
